If there’s one Irish name synonymous with global tech, it’s Paddy Cosgrave. For over a decade, he has been at the helm of Web Summit, steering it from a small gathering in Dublin to a sprawling international phenomenon.
The event’s rise to prominence is not just a business success—it’s a testament to the power of vision, persistence, and embracing the chaos of building something extraordinary.
Yet, like many great stories, the journey of Web Summit and its founder is layered and complex. Bold decisions, sharp turns, and the occasional stumble mark Paddy’s path. But above all, it’s an inspiring tale of Irish ingenuity taking the global stage.
Building a Global Phenomenon
Web Summit wasn’t always the juggernaut it is today. Back in 2009, when Paddy Cosgrave and his co-founders organised the first event, it was a modest affair in Dublin with just 150 attendees. The goal? To create a space where startups could meet investors, ideas could collide, and innovation could flourish.

At its core, Web Summit was built on the idea that great things happen when the right people are brought together. This philosophy powered the event through its early years, with the team even experimenting with algorithms to organise seating at dinners and groupings for pub crawls, aiming to create meaningful connections.
Fast forward to today, and Web Summit draws over 70,000 people worldwide. Its stages host influential figures—politicians, celebrities, and visionaries—who share their insights with an eager audience. Lisbon, its home since 2016, lights up every November with the buzz of tech leaders, entrepreneurs, and dreamers coming together.

The decision to relocate to Lisbon was a transformative chapter in the story of Web Summit. While the official narrative cites logistical hurdles in Dublin as the catalyst for this bold move, whispers of ongoing political tensions hint at a more complex backdrop.
Websummit’s impressive growth timeline
Lisbon, however, emerged as a beacon of opportunity, offering not just a stunning cultural scene but also a supportive government and enticing financial incentives that eased the transition. Today, the conference plays a vital role in boosting Lisbon’s economy, contributing millions each year and solidifying the city’s standing as a bustling epicentre of innovation.
The Visionary Behind the Curtain
Paddy Cosgrave is not your typical entrepreneur. Raised on a farm in County Wicklow, his early exposure to computers ignited a lifelong fascination with technology. His father, a dairy farmer who also loved coding, insisted that computers would shape the future—a belief that profoundly influenced Paddy’s path.
At Trinity College Dublin, Paddy’s talents as a connector and innovator began to emerge. He honed his skills in networking, public speaking, and navigating complex systems—traits that would later define his leadership style.
Paddy stands out in his knack for seeing opportunities where others see obstacles. He transformed networking at Web Summit by introducing algorithms to pair attendees based on shared interests. This innovation revolutionized the conference experience, ensuring that Web Summit became a breeding ground for groundbreaking deals and partnerships.
However, Paddy’s journey has not been without challenges. In October 2023, remarks about the Israel-Hamas conflict sparked backlash from major sponsors, leading to his resignation as CEO. Yet, his return six months later underscored his resilience and centrality to Web Summit’s identity. It’s clear that for Paddy, setbacks are not endings—they’re opportunities to recalibrate and forge ahead.
A Reflection of Irish Ingenuity
For all its international acclaim, Web Summit remains deeply connected to Ireland. Over 70 Irish startups exhibited in Lisbon this year, showcasing the best of homegrown innovation. It’s a significant leap from last year and a testament to Paddy’s ongoing commitment to supporting Irish entrepreneurs.
This year there are 73 Irish startups exhibiting at Web Summit. Last year it was just 41. Why the huge jump?
In part it’s because last years Irish startups program was undermined in a deeply underhanded manner by a co-working space and accelerator program in Ireland, that spread… x.com/i/web/status/1…

Irish professionals attending Web Summit often describe it as a source of inspiration—a reminder that ambitious ideas born here can achieve global success. For startups, the conference is more than just an event; it’s a launchpad for ideas, a meeting place for investors, and a space to learn from the best in the business.
Web Summit’s impact extends beyond the tech world. Initiatives like the women-in-tech program have set new standards for diversity in an industry that has long struggled with gender imbalance. In 2021, the conference achieved 50.5% female attendance—a milestone that reflects Paddy’s commitment to creating a more inclusive environment. These efforts resonate with the broader Irish values of equality and opportunity, reinforcing Web Summit’s roots even as it operates globally.
No journey to the top is without challenges; Web Summit’s story is no exception. The pandemic posed significant hurdles, forcing the team to pivot to virtual events. While many companies struggled, Web Summit thrived, using its technology to keep connections alive. This adaptability is a hallmark of the organisation’s resilience and a testament to the foresight of its leadership.
Even Paddy’s personal challenges have become learning moments for the organisation. His resignation and return highlighted the importance of leadership, accountability, and resilience. These episodes are a reminder that leadership isn’t about avoiding mistakes—it’s about owning them and finding a way forward.
What Lies Ahead
As Web Summit expands its global footprint to markets like Rio and Qatar, the stakes are higher than ever. New opportunities bring fresh challenges: Can the conference maintain its spirit of connection and innovation as it scales? Can Paddy balance his outspoken nature with the demands of diplomacy and leadership?
For now, the future looks bright. Record-breaking attendance, growing revenues, and an ever-expanding portfolio of events signal that Web Summit is poised for continued success. And with Paddy at the helm, one thing is certain: the journey will never be boring.
